Part III. Writing Exercise

The novel begins with a quote from Thomas Parke D’Invilliers, a character from Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise:
“Then wear the gold hat, if that will move her;
If you can bounce high, bounce for her too,
Till she cry “Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover,
I must have you!”
What does this poem mean? Examine the intention behind this epigraph. Based on what you learned from the Audio Guide, why do you think Fitzgerald chose this quote?

Length: Written neatly or typed, 150-200 words (1/2 - 3/4 page)

Part IV. Homework

Read Chapter 1 (pp. 1–21). As you read, consider these questions:
Why is Nick telling this story?
Why is Nick “confused and a little disgusted” (p. 20) at the end of the chapter?
Enjoy your reading!
